Burna Boy bags second Grammy nomination

Should Burna Boy win, he will become Nigeria’s second Grammy winner after Sikiru Adepoju

ByJayne AugoyeNovember 24, 2020 2 min readADVERTISEMENT

Burnaboy’s latest album ‘Twice As Tall’ has gotten him a second shot at winning a Grammy.

The talented singer, on Monday, bagged a World Music Album nomination alongside Antibalas, Bebel Gilberto, Anoushka Shankar, and Tianariwen.

Antibalas is an American afrobeat band modelled after Fela Kuti’s Africa 70 band while Bebel Gilberto is a popular Brazilian-American singer.

Anoushka Shankar is a British Indian sitar player and composer while Tianariwen is a group of northern Malian singers.

In October, the Recording Academy announced the renaming of the ‘Best World Music Album’ to ‘Best Global Music Album.’

Burna Boy, 29, lost in his first attempt to win a Grammy award after being nominated in the best world music album category in January 2020. Beninese music legend, Angelique Kidjo, won the award.

‘Twice As Tall’ which is Burna Boy’s fifth album was released in August. Burna Boy, his mum cum manager, Bosede Ogulu, and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, were the executive producers.

The album was produced by Telz, P2J, Timbaland, Leriq, Rexxie, Skread, Andre Harris, Jae5, Mike Dean, and many more.

It also featured guest appearances from Naughty by Nature, the Kenyan band Sauti Sol, Senegal’s musical titan, Youssou N’Dour, and Chris Martin of Coldplay.

Music: Reekado Banks – “U dey Mad” ft Attifaya

Listen to the Official Audio for You Dey Mad by Reekado Banks featuring AttiFaya from the EP Off The Record.

Banks Music boss, Reekado Banks releases a brand new single titled “YOU DEY MAD“. This after the recent online drama between himself and Starboy for wanting to release the song ‘Omo Olomo‘ featuring Wizkid during the #EndSars saga and the unrest in Nigeria.

As time hurtles down towards the release of Off The Record, Reekado’s first project since 2016’s Spotlight, the musician has been in a constant state of music drops to keep fans’ appetites up for the extended play. His latest drop, “You Dey Mad,” featuring Attifaya is many things at once: a warning, defiant messaging, and a warm singalong.

Reekado keeps doing what he has done for much of the last year, broadening the edges of his music-making and incorporating newer elements into the process. On “You Dey Mad,” he goes for waspish call-and-responses interjected with textured crooning that ever slightly advances this record.
Gently increasing the lilt of his voice as the song progressed, Reekado Banks turned a defiant message to something slicker and lustrous hinting at the transformative quality that stands him out as one of Nigerian pop’s best singers.

Eventually, “You Dey Mad” fades into muted garbles and woozy reverbs, but not before Reekado Banks has served a reminder of why Off The Record, due for release on November 27, will be on at all kinds of places upon its release.

Listen and Enjoy the new warning jam below

Tiwa Savage Reveals She Tried Committing Suicide Twice After Being Bullied

Sensational singer, Tiwa Savage has made a shocking revelation about growing up in the UK as a teenager.

The singer who broke the internet yesterday with nude photos made the revelation during an interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu for Black Box. Tiwa recounted how she left Nigeria at age 10 and how she was bullied in high school. According to her, the bullying got so bad that she attempted committing suicide twice as a teenager.

In her words: “When I got to school, it was horrible and I had an accent. My first day I clearly cannot forget. I got to school late and my teacher couldn’t pronounce my name. She then asked why I was late to school and I said ‘sorry ma there was go slow.’ Everyone started laughing. I was teased so badly,”

“They use to call me ‘African girl’ ‘Fufu’, ‘We heard your food smells badly’ it was so bad that I literally tried to kill myself two times. I was depressed and bullied. They would flush my hair down during lunch break. At some point, I use to have a police escort me to the bus. I wanted to bleach and started growing my hair. It was really terrible.”

Speaking on her relationship with her mother and how she was trained while growing up in the UK, she described her mom as a typical Nigerian parent living in London“I found it out initially, I didn’t like her because she was tough on me. Not that I didn’t like her but it was weird. I was really close to her, I could tell her everything. I could tell her things you shouldn’t even tell a Nigerian mom. I would want to go out for parties all night and she would be like ‘be back by 9 and I’m like the people won’t even be there yet. I’ll be so angry. I” she said.

Tiwa also spoke about how she hated her skin and wanted to bleach because she was insecure. “I want to bleach because I hated my dark skin, she caught me and threw everything and I was like what is your business. I think it was between 14, 15, and 16…I was really insecure.”
